MATH
We are currently working on Number Sense in Math. This includes integers, prime and composite numbers, multiples, and factors.
Please spend some time reviewing the multiplication facts with your child. If they do not have facts memorized they will struggle with grade 6 math concepts. A good game to play is multiplication war, and all you need is a deck of cards. Your child will be able to teach you how to play as we have gone over it within the classroom.
LANGUAGE ARTS
In Language Arts we have been working on writing independently and getting our idea's out. We have started to review different types of punctuation and are working towards remembering and correctly utilizing commas, and apostrophes. If your child is writing at home, remind them to check for capital letters on nouns and ending punctuation for all sentences. We will continue to work on improving our use of punctuation throughout the year.
We have reviewed the writing process and spent time learning how to gather ideas, choose an idea, and begin writing on that topic. We have also looked at different ways of organizing our thoughts on a topic before we begin to write.
We will start to work on developing a suspenseful narrative as the month progresses. Otherwise, we have worked on planning out problems and writing good problems for our stories.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We have been talking about different levels of government and have been focused in on the Federal Election. Students in Grade 6 held a mock election this week and all cast ballots for their choice of candidate. Our Poll Clerks handed out ballots to Citizens who came to vote, while Scrutineers for all the political parties watched. When it came down to counting the ballots our Deputy Returning Officers kept a close eye on the count, and performed a recount of the ballots as it was so close. While I cannot yet release these results, you are welcome to ask your child who won the election with our vote. StudentVote.ca will release the parallel election results on election night - so keep an eye on the news!
SCIENCE
We had the really cool opportunity this month to have a visit from The Telus World of Science in Edmonton - they came and presented to students about the Night Sky. We have completed our unit on Trees and Forests and will now focus in on the unit Sky Science. We will cover the phases of the moon, constellations, seasons, hours of sunlight, the planets, sun, and solar system. It is a great unit - so encourage your child to get out when it is dark and take a peak upwards to see what they notice.
